When it comes to approaching ubiquitous artificial intelligence (AI), media outlets are adopting diametrically opposed (and therefore mutually exclusive) approaches. Some outlets have opted to confront the big AI players, whom they accuse of stealing their content without their consent, while others are betting on collaboration. The latter group includes the publishing house Condé Nast , which has sealed an agreement with OpenAI so that the company led by Sam Altman can integrate content from its titles into its AI products.

Under this partnership, ChatGPT, SearchGPT, and other OpenAI products will deploy content from prestigious media outlets such as Vogue , The New Yorker , Condé Nast Traveler , GQ , Architectural Digest , Vanity Fair , Wired , and Bon Appétit , among others.

“With the introduction of our SearchGPT prototype, we are testing new search features to make finding information and content from trusted sources faster and more intuitive,” OpenAI explains in a post published on its corporate blog . “We are amalgamating our conversational models with information from the web to grace the user with quick answers that are rooted in clear and relevant sources,” the ChatGPT parent company emphasizes.

OpenAI says the SearchGPT prototype will provide users with direct links to news articles and plans to integrate some of these features into ChatGPT in the near future.

Condé Nast is the latest media company to join forces with AI-focused startups to deploy content across its products.

In recent months, multiple media outlets have signed agreements with OpenAI and other AI companies.

For its part, OpenAI announced last May a similar agreement with News Corp. to have access to current and archived content from newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal , MarketWatch , Barron’s and The New York Post . Also in May, the company led by Sam Altman reached an agreement with Reddit to train its AI models with content uploaded to this platform.

Other outlets, by contrast, are trying tooth and nail to protect their content from vo australia whatsapp lead racious AI startups . Last June, the Center for Investigative Reporting sued OpenAI and its main investment arm, Microsoft, for allegedly violating copyright rules. And publications such as The New York Times , The Chicago Tribune and The New York Daily have also engaged in bitter legal battles with OpenAI.

In December of last year, The New York Times decided to sue Microsoft and OpenAI for intellectual property infringements directly related to the use of journalistic content in the training of ChatGPT. And The Chicago Tribune , along with seven other newspapers, also took legal action against OpenAI last April.
