What are Google Shopping ads?
Shopping ads, sometimes called product listing ads or PLAs, are product listings that appear at the top of Google search results . These ads are managed by two platforms: Google Ads and Google Merchant Center.
Shopping ads no longer just appear in Google’s standard search results . You can also see them on the Shopping tab, on search partner sites , in the Shopping comparison site and apps (iOS and Android ), and even on YouTube and the Google Display Network . Because Shopping ads are so useful to shoppers and popular with advertisers, Google is constantly expanding the reach of Shopping, which means more opportunities to reach shoppers . Shopping ads on Google run on two platforms: Google Ads and Google Merchant Center. Google Ads is where your ad campaigns live , where you set budgets, manage bids, get insights, and optimize. Google Merchant Center is where you store your product data , as well as shipping and sales tax information. We’ll talk about product feeds in a bit. For now, it’s just detailed information about your products, organized in a format that Google loves. Your product feed is what Google uses to create Shopping ads. Setting up and managing Shopping ads is a little different than setting up traditional text ads. With the Shopping tab, Google uses your feed, your site , and more to determine which search queries will trigger your ads. Because of this, setting up your product feed has some similarities to eCommerce SEO .
Create a Google Merchant Center account
Google Merchant Center is where your feed lives. It’s also where you set up tax and shipping rules — all of which are necessary before you can run Shopping ads. Here are some tips for setting up your Merchant Center account:
Have access to your domain registrar. You need to verify that you own your domain name, and then claim it for use in Merchant Center. The easiest way to do this is to log in to your domain registrar and grant Google access. You can do this all from within Merchant Center.
Understand your tax and shipping settings. You'll need to set up your tax and shipping rules in the General Settings section of Merchant Center. For sales tax, you can enter your rates directly or select the states that charge sales tax and let Google determine the rate. For shipping, you can choose a flat rate (which may include free shipping), a rate calculated based on the carriers you use, or a rate based on a rate table or rules.
Link Merchant Center to Google Ads. Under Settings and Ads, click Link accounts. You'll need your 10-digit Google Ads ID , and you must be signed in with an email address that has admin access to both Merchant Center and Google Ads.
