In the fast-paced world of online marketing, adaptability is key to success. Google, the undisputed giant among search engines, is continually refining its algorithms to ensure users always have access to high-quality and relevant content.

One of the latest developments concerns Core Web Vitals, which will introduce a new metric for measuring the technical parameters of websites starting in March 2024: Interaction to Next Paint (INP), which replaces the student data previous First Input Delay (FID).

Poor Google Core Web Vitals metrics of a website

The Core Web Vitals in brief
The Google Core Web Vitals together form the cornerstones of the page experience and usability of all websites: loading time (Largest Contentful Paint, LCP) , visual stability (Cumulative Layout Shift, CLS) , and, traditionally, response time (First Input Delay, FID) . These parameters are not just numbers, but key metrics for ranking in Google search results, and therefore essential to a website's success.

With the new update, the First Input Delay is now being replaced by the Interaction to Next Paint (INP) – INP measures the response time a website needs to react to user input. After the metric was introduced last year, it is scheduled to completely replace the FID in March 2024 .

So what exactly does the INP say?
As mentioned, INP measures the time between a user's first interaction on a website and the next visual feedback or visible change on the screen. In other words, it indicates how quickly a website responds to user actions and updates content.

A low INP is therefore optimal for a positive user experience, as it indicates that the website responds quickly and smoothly to interactions. A high INP, on the other hand, can lead to user frustration due to perceived delays between their actions and the website's response.

The INP is therefore another important factor that website operators should consider as part of their search engine optimization in order to ensure an outstanding user experience and improve their ranking in Google search results.
