It is no longer a secret for charities that they can use social media to promote products and services among relevant target groups. But are attractive content, advertisements and an extensive social media marketing plan within the reach of most non-profits? And how do you get more volunteers and donors via social media?

According to the Global NGO Tech Report, only 32% of charities worldwide have a wel special lead thought-out social media strategy. Understandably, allocating budgets to recruit volunteers or donors is not always feasible. Despite this, there are two important functions of social media in addition to targeted advertising:

communicating with a network of motivated volunteers and donors
Fortunately, we are increasingly seeing successful social media campaigns. A good example of this is the September Campaign 2015 by Charity:Water, a charity that is committed to increasing access to clean water around the world. Charity:Water used video material and stories to recruit donors via social media. By sharing inspiring stories from real people, they raised over 1.8 million dollars in 2015. Regardless of the budget for a social media strategy or communication materials, the quality of the message still clearly comes first.

Tell an inspiring story
Charities have a remarkable advantage when it comes to communicating via social media. They are in the business of ' human connection '. Inspirational stories are often within reach. This is in contrast to many companies, where they have to think longer about a deeper storyline and characters that they have to connect to products or services.
