Over the past decade, online interactions have become as common as offline interactions. However, a large portion of members remain passive within communities, meaning that their potential is far from being realized. Could cryptocurrency be a solution to this?


Platforms such as Twitter, Wikipedia and Frankwatching (and many more!) are indispensable in our daily lives these days. People wake up with Instagram and go to bed with Facebook. But many members are not active, our customer dashboards (tens of thousands of users in total) show that this is 83 percent. They may 'read', but do not actively participate in the community. But why does this need to be solved? What challenges do online communities face? And why could cryptocurrency be a solution to these challenges? I will delve deeper into this in this article.

An online community is a virtual place where people with common characteristics come together on a regular basis to help each other directly or indirectly in achieving goals, expectations and activities by sharing information and ideas, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of a community ( thanks for this extensive definition ).

It is not only the big well-known social networks that have increased in popularity and use. Online communities too! Online communities are used both privately (by individuals) and professionally (by organizations) to escape from the social 'chaos' that we fax lists xperience today. People are increasingly recognizing the advantage of online communities. They do not experience social pressure and their profiles and information are not sold to the highest bidder.

Since 2006, the use of social technologies has increased enormously. Not only among individuals, but certainly also among organizations. Namely, more than 72 percent of companies use a (simple) form of social technology. They do this with the aim of building a sustainable community, and thereby further growing as an organization or being able to give something back to a community. However, there are very few organizations that get the full potential out of this. This is evident from this research by the global consultancy firm McKinsey. But also from our own experience with the online communities of Open Social. That is why we asked ourselves: is rewarding with cryptocurrency the solution for this? It could even solve several major challenges.

Why should online communities become more active?
Why should we solve the challenges of online communities? Well, because of the tremendous speed at which online communities are growing, it becomes more important to improve the way these social technologies are used. After all, the internet is still the primary place for people to connect. It’s not going to get any less. This is because (at the core of the internet) there are two central desires:

The ability to navigate through information
The ability to connect people
